Studies on sympathetic innervatioln of the rabbits

Abstract
It has been generally understood that the vagina is under the control of the antagonistic innervation of the autonomic nerves, however, the physiologic significance of the hypogastric and pelvic nerve innervation to the vagina are not-clearly, elucidated.
In this paper, effects of stimulation of the hypogastric and pelvic nerves on the vagina were studied in situ and effects of some autonomic drugs on the vaginal response to stimulation of these nerves were also investigated. In addition, effects of some autonomic drugs on the isolated vaginal muscle strips were studied. The results obtained were as follows.
1. Stimulation of the hypogastric nerve and the administration of catechol amine (norepinephrine and epinephrine) evoked a marked contraction of the vagina and an increase of the intra-vaginal pressure in situ, and the responses were abolished completely by pretreatment with regitine or phenoxybenzamine, whereas the responses were not affected by pretreatment with propranolol.
2. Vaginal contractions and intra-vaginal pressure changes were most effective in the stimulus frequencies ranging from 50 to 60 cps.
3. Stimulation of the pelvic nerve and administration of acetylcholine did not change the intra-vaginal pressure in situ, and acetylcholine had no effect on the isolated vaginal muscle strip.
4. By the administration of norepinephrine or epinephrine a marked contraction of the vaginal strip was produced, and the contraction was more prominent in upper portion of the vagina than the lower portion.
5. The responses of the vaginal muscle strips to norepinephrine or epinephrine were abolished completely by pretreatment with regitine or phenoxybenzamine, whereas the responses were not affected by pretreatment with propranolol.
